Songtalkings
In which we share a recent talk about our musical backgrounds, how Songwritings came about, our influences and inspirations, and how three of the songs took shape.
Hello! A slight change of tack in this post as we share a recent talk we did for the writers’ organisation 26.*
It took place in front of a select gathering over Zoom and includes us talking about how Songwritings started, our personal musical back stories, the parallels between lyric writing and copywriting, and a couple of examples of how our songs evolve from an original rough recording by Nick to a multilayered finished product by Kate. There are three videos in there, plus an exclusive insight into Kate’s childhood bassoon days and Nick’s highly influential ‘Busy Book 9’.
Back soon with more songs and writings.
For anyone new here, Songwritings is a conversation between Kate van der Borgh (writer, D&AD Masterclass trainer, musician, first novel ‘And He Shall Appear’ out soon with Fourth Estate) and Nick Asbury (writer, poet, Perpetual Disappointments Diarist, purpose critic, with a side interest in Tin-Pan-Alley-tinged songwriting). The conversation features original songs, usually written by Nick, then reinterpreted and brought to life with Kate on all instruments and vocals.
* Many thanks to Andy Hayes, Sophie Gordon and everyone who showed up for the Zoom call. We’ve edited out the Q&A towards the end as people on the call didn’t strictly know we’d be sharing it like this, but the rest is all here.
